A Reminder to all Sales & Meals Tax Filers Regarding Your Advanced Payment of Sales Tax Obligations

The MA Department of Revenue (DOR) will soon be sending out notices to taxpayers regarding compliance with the state’s Advanced Payment of Sales Tax Requirements.  Taxpayers who have more than $150,000 in total liability for certain tax types from the previous year are required to make an advance payment before the related tax return (sales and meals) is due.  This requirement has been in place since 2021 so many RAM members are already subject to these rules.

A notice (sample version) will be sent to taxpayers this month to notify them that they are required to make advance payments in 2025.  Taxpayers qualify to make advance payments because they had more than $150,000 in tax liabilities in 2024.

A “conditional” notice will be sent in the next couple of weeks to those taxpayers who are estimated to have more than $150,000 in tax liabilities by December 31.  Once December tax returns are filed on January 30, 2025, and DOR has more complete information, a notice will be sent to taxpayers who had more than $150,000 in tax liabilities for 2024 but did not previously receive a notice.

Advocacy Request: Business Sign-on Letter in Support of Credit Card Competition Act

RAM is seeking your assistance on behalf of FMI and the Merchants Payments Coalition. We need individual businesses to sign a short letter of support for the Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA) that will be sent to your U.S. Senators. We previously asked members to sign onto a letter of support for the CCCA earlier this year.

We request that businesses complete a form to sign the short letter (letter text below). The Merchants Payments Coalition will compile lists of businesses signed that operate in each state and a letter will be individualized and sent to each U.S. Senator from those businesses (one letter per state listing all the businesses that signed and operate in that state).

Dear Senator,

We are writing today to ask for your support for S.1838 the Credit Card Competition Act of 2023. The broken credit card marketplace and the burdensome fees it imposes impact every [state name] retailer and our customers.

CCCA will introduce competition and choice into the marketplace, will provide relief to [state name] merchants, boost innovation, and reduce costs for all [state name].

We the undersigned strongly urge your support for this important piece of legislation.

Sincerely,
